I was delighted to find scientific evidence of what I just “knew” about the importance of having an abundance of words to choose from and I try and impress this upon my teenage children (over and over again). The difference between “sycophant” and “brown noser” (although they mean basically the same thing) is light years away.

Great post Luciano. I wish I could send viewers straight to your “Vocab Test Score” diagram. In a recent Facebook status, I made the point that the more I enhance my vocabulary, the more I realize how little others know; which humbles me to know that I still may be ignorant to someone, somewhere! I look forward to reading more of your articles.

Good post. “I would risk saying professional success depends entirely on thinking and communication skills.” – I’d add one more skill to this – leveraging. People who can leverage, seem to succeed better.

Me and my friend have always been intrigued by expanding our understaing of vocabulary words. We always tell eachother other the new words that we have learnt and compete in using better words than the other.So when our Planning 10 teaher said we were to do a project on pretty much anything we liked, worth 20% of our grade, we decided to do it on “The Power of Words” Your article was very interesting and it helped us with our project. So I just wanted to say thanks.

I’m not sure I agree with the point about vocabulary broadening our minds…just because we are unable to vocalise subversive thoughts, I don’t believe this actually stops us from thinking or feeling them.

Nice post, I like how you brought out a cogent argument. Basically I try to improve my vocab my reading stuff online and then I check up the meaning of words I don’t know on thefreedictionary.com. By far, it has been my favourite. They have got an American, British and a baritone pronunciation of the word along with a thesaurus, so it’s pretty useful if you are interested in expanding your vocabulary.
