Wonderful strategies. Would love to add another one to the list. ;)

Building your vocabulary visually is an often overlooked manner of learning and retaining vocabulary. Visual connections with words enhance both the understanding as well as retentivity.

Would love to have you visit us @ http://www.weboword.com and know more about your thoughts on our concept.

Additionally, we extend a warm welcome to students and English learners across the globe to create their own visual vocab and share it with us @ http://weboword.ning.com

I find that reading is definitely the key one here...by reading texts that have complex vocabulary, you not only find new words but also get examples of the correct contexts to use them in.

I will try that method. Maybe I will post my thoughts on it after a few days of evaluation.

I use a spreadsheet to keep my vocabulary. Among the many columns (such as word, definition, date, example sentence) I have one that indicates if I already used that word in a real situation.

Using this set up, it's very easy to filter out the already used words.

Hope this helps!

Lately I have not used mnemosyne as much as I think I should. The reason: it is very boring. Maybe trying to use new words is a better approach. Maybe you can keep new words in a document and then every day try to use them in some way. Once used they can be removed from the document. Does anyone else have similar experiences?

A very inspirational article. I use mnemosyne (http://www.mnemosyne-proj.org) as my personal word database. It is a flashcard program. After reading this article I think I might try to add sentences to words that I find difficult.
